Reclaiming lake Olbolossat under the Wetland Restoration Programme

Reclaiming lake Olbolossat under the Wetland Restoration Programme – a joint initiative of the National and County governments – has moved a notch higher with a delegation led by the Principal Secretaries Environment Hon. Festus Ng’eno, and that of Forestry, Hon. Gitonga Mugambi, visiting His Excellency Governor (Dr.) Moses Kiarie Badilisha to deliberate on the programme’s structure of implementation.

The leaders agreed that the lake’s restoration programme, which Governor Badilisha has proposed several multi sectoral strategies, should be fast tracked to ensure that a sustainable land use management policy is implemented.

“Reclaiming lake Olbolossat has far reaching environmental and economic benefits that go beyond Nyandarua county. The strategy should ensure that local populations benefit from the asset and own its restoration for sustainability. We must also discourage encroachment by securing and fencing the lake,” the Governor noted, adding that the ecosystem has the potential to be a national trees’ nursery creating employment to thousands.

In attendance were Chief Conservator of Forests Alex Lemarkoko, CECMs Hon. Samuel Wachira and Hon. Paul Wanjau, among other leaders.
