Stakeholders involved in the Ndunyu Njeru-Ihithe road project, acting on a petition of the County Assembly of Nyandarua and brought together by the Senate Committee on Lands and Natural Resources gathered this morning at Ndunyu Njeru, North Kinangop ward for deliberations on the stalled Mau Mau flagship project.

Supporting the petition to have the major road connecting Nyandarua and Nyeri counties constructed, His Excellency Governor (Dr.) Moses Kiarie Badilisha said that there is an opportunity to strike a sustainable balance between economic development – which the road seeks to anchor, and environmental conservation which is one of the reasons cited by some of the opponents of the project.

“This is not a new road. It’s only being improved. It has existed between generations and hence the name of this town – Ndunyu Njeru (meaning a new market), which clearly shows the existence of communication and trade between our people on each side of the mountain. And by nature, our people are conservators and protectors of fragile ecosystems and it would be unwise to punish them for that which they’ve preserved,” Governor Badilisha observed.

Other leaders present included county Senator and chair of the committee Hon. John Methu, several MPs, MCAs and other national leaders.
