101st Ushirika Day Celebrations in Ndaragwa Sub-County, during which His Excellency Governor (Dr.) Moses N. Badilisha Kiarie hailed Nyandarua’s vibrant co-operative movement for its role in reviving the County’s economy.
 
Nyandarua is Kenya’s leading potato and second largest milk producer respectively, sectors in which its 273 Savings and Credit Co-operative Societies (Saccos) are dominant, with more than half of the County’s 638,289 residents being members.
Speaking on the Governor’s behalf, Chief Officer for Co-operative Development Mr. Charles Nderitu rallied members to adopt best practices, including digital innovation, good governance and aggregation to enhance their bargaining power.
 
Saccos have become central to the County head’s ongoing transformative agenda, amidst rising issuance of milk coolers, churns, water storage tanks, information technology infrastructure, motor bikes, transformers, financial assistance and capacity building.
 
Themed “Co-operatives: Partners for accelerated sustainable development,” similar celebrations were witnessed countywide, with several Saccos receiving trophies and certificates for prudent management and administration.
 
Mr. Nderitu was accompanied by Tower Sacco Chief Executive Officer Mr. Patrick Njenga and acting Director for Co-operatives Ms. Hellen Gichuki.
